In a press briefing, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru reaffirmed federal government support for Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, the naval officer who confronted Nyesom Wike during a land dispute allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (Rtd) in Abuja. 


The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has publicly defended the actions of Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, the naval officer who confronted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a heated altercation over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.

The land in question is reportedly linked to the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (Rtd).

In his statement, Minister Badaru affirmed that Yerima acted “within the limits of his constitutional duty”, emphasizing that no officer should be punished for performing his lawful responsibilities.

> “We will not allow any soldier, airman, or rating to be humiliated or intimidated while carrying out legitimate duties,” Badaru said. “The Ministry of Defence stands firmly by our personnel who act within the law.”

The clash reportedly occurred when Wike visited the site and ordered that all ongoing activities be stopped, leading to a confrontation with the naval officer. The altercation, which was captured on video and circulated online, sparked a wave of public debate on the limits of authority between civilian and military officers in matters involving public property.


While the FCT Minister has maintained that the land belongs to the government, military sources insist it was properly allocated to the Navy years ago.


As investigations continue, the Ministry of Defence has reiterated its call for restraint and respect for institutional boundaries, urging all parties to avoid further escalation.
