“Unsafe Well Water in Oka-Ama Sparks Health Concerns, Residents Call for Government Help”

 

A young resident raises alarm over exposed, unhygienic well and urges authorities to provide safe drinking water.

Residents of Oka-Ama community in Unyeada are facing a growing health concern as the community’s primary source of water—a local well—has been found to be unsafe for consumption.

Bigchiefvibes Media had a chat with a young woman from the community, who preferred to remain anonymous. She detailed the condition of the well, explaining that it is uncovered, exposed to germs, and contaminated with grasses and insects, posing serious risks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and other illnesses.

She further explained that during festive periods, the well comes under increased pressure as people from neighboring villages and nearby fishing camps arrive, some using local canoes to draw water. This situation makes access to safe drinking water extremely difficult for the local population.

The young resident appealed directly to the Andoni Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Prince Lucky Promise Otuo, as well as relevant authorities and concerned citizens, to provide the community with safe pipe-borne water to prevent health crises.

Her testimony underscores the urgent need for infrastructure development and timely intervention in remote communities, particularly during high-demand periods, to ensure public safety.
