Amaechi Says 2027 Is His — Rejects VP Slot, Vows to Run for President

Former minister rules out any vice-presidential offer, insisting his ambition is strictly the presidency.


Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed widespread speculation suggesting he is being considered as a potential running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections. Amaechi made it clear that he is not interested in any vice-presidential arrangement and remains focused solely on contesting for the nation’s top office.

The clarification, issued through his media aide, David Iyofor, stressed that Amaechi will not accept any VP offer, regardless of the party or candidate involved. According to Iyofor, “Amaechi is not seeking to be a running mate to anybody. His ambition is to contest for the presidency in 2027, and nothing less.”

This statement follows comments by media mogul and political ally, Dele Momodu, who hinted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might consider Amaechi as a running mate if other options fall through. The remark instantly triggered political debates and speculations across the country.

Amaechi, however, has now put the matter to rest. He reaffirmed that he will be contesting under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party he joined earlier this year after exiting the All Progressives Congress (APC). Amaechi previously contested the APC presidential primary in 2022, coming in second place.

According to sources within the ADC, Amaechi believes his experience, regional positioning, and national influence make him a strong contender as Nigeria looks toward a new political direction in 2027. He has repeatedly argued that it is time for the South to produce the next president — a stance that continues to shape political conversations across the country.


With his latest declaration, Amaechi has firmly shut down the VP narrative, signaling that his 2027 presidential bid is not negotiable. As political alignments and negotiations continue nationwide, all eyes are now on how Amaechi’s bold stance will influence the evolving power play ahead of the elections.
