Minister steps down on health grounds as Nigeria’s security landscape faces new challenges


Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, citing health reasons. He formally submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday.

The presidency, through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the acceptance of Badaru’s resignation and thanked him for his service. The statement also noted that a new nominee would be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in the coming days.

Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister in August 2023. His resignation comes at a critical time, weeks after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, prompting concerns over the continuity of ongoing security operations.

Political observers are now speculating on who will take over the Defence Ministry and whether the new minister will be able to strengthen public confidence while addressing the country’s pressing security challenges.
