Confusion Trails Cancellation of Isi-Okwan Championship 2025 as Officials Give Differing Accounts
In a sudden turn of events, the Isi-Okwan Championship 2025 has been abruptly cancelled, sparking confusion and frustration among organizers, participants, and stakeholders. Conflicting accounts from officials have left many questioning the official reasoning behind the decision.
Bigchiefvibes Media spoke with Mr. Okpojo Ndendeng Uriah, Head of Media for the tournament, during an online interview on Monday, 15 December 2025. According to Mr. Uriah, the precise cause of the cancellation remains unclear. He revealed that a burial novelty football match for the late Ma. Christianah Josiah was reportedly scheduled on the pitch originally designated for the championship.
“The Board of Trustees of the Patriotic Ambassador of Obolo, led by Prince Gogo Oguichen, approached Sir Gift Samuel Agorkedeng, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), to halt the tournament,” Mr. Uriah said. The reasons cited included alleged safety threats and doubts about the LOC’s competence in managing the event.
However, investigations suggest that these claims are unsubstantiated. Comrade Gershion Fredrick, Director of Sports Administration, confirmed that 99% of the tournament materials had already been procured, expressing bewilderment at the sudden directive to cancel.
Adding to the controversy, two venues, Glorious Stadium and City Stadium were prepared for the tournament. Mr. Uriah questioned why the event could not have proceeded at the alternative venue if one field was deemed unsuitable. He described the LOC’s reaction as “disheartened and deeply frustrated” by the abrupt decision.
The official cancellation was communicated by Sir Gift Samuel on behalf of the organization’s leadership, citing “threats envisaged to hamper the success of the tournament” and extending apologies for any inconvenience caused to participants and registered teams.
The discrepancy between the LOC, the Board of Trustees, and the organization’s leadership has generated widespread uncertainty, leaving the fate of future editions of the championship in question.
