Port Harcourt — Tension has risen between the Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, over the deteriorating condition of public primary and secondary schools across the state.
During a plenary session of the Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt on Monday, 1 December 2025, Speaker Amaewhule drew attention to the deplorable state of public schools, warning that if urgent measures are not taken, the education system could collapse. He said, “Our public schools are fast failing. The infrastructure is dilapidated, classrooms are overcrowded, and teaching resources are grossly insufficient. Immediate intervention is required to save the future of our children.”
Responding to these concerns, Governor Fubara, speaking later the same day at the combined quarterly meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in Port Harcourt, reassured stakeholders that the state government is taking the matter seriously. He promised a substantial budget allocation for education in 2026, emphasizing that quality education is a top priority for his administration. “We acknowledge the concerns raised by the Speaker and the public. The 2026 budget will reflect our commitment to revamping public schools and providing better learning environments for students across Rivers State,” the Governor stated.
The exchange highlights the ongoing dialogue between the executive and legislative arms of the state over educational development, with both sides emphasizing the need for strategic planning and investment to address the infrastructure gaps and enhance learning outcomes.
