Unyeada Lays High Chief Ben Jene Gwendeng III to Rest in Grand Burial Ceremony

The Unyeada Kingdom in Andoni Local Government Area was filled with solemn reflection and cultural display as the remains of High Chief/Hon. Ben Jene Gwendeng III, JP, Okan Egwe Ogwalamba of Unyeada, were laid to rest in a well-attended burial ceremony.

The burial rites took place at his family residence in Unyeada, drawing large crowds of family members, community leaders, youths, elders, friends, and well-wishers from within and outside the kingdom.

The burial activities commenced on Friday, December 26, 2025, and featured several cultural and social events including boat regattas, road walks, novelty football matches, and other traditional displays that reflected the rich heritage of the Unyeada people.

On Saturday, December 27, the body of the late High Chief arrived from Belk sympathy Mortuary Betem __ Khana LGA and was received with full traditional rites before he was laid to rest in his compound in accordance with Unyeada customs. Thanksgiving services and merriment continued throughout the week as friends and relatives celebrated the impactful life he lived.

Speaking with Bigchiefvibes Media, Mr. Dickson Ben Gwendeng, first son of the late High Chief and chief mourner, expressed gratitude to God for the successful burial of his father despite the challenges faced by the family.

He noted that although there were initial difficulties and opposition from some quarters, the family remained steadfast and, by the grace of God, was able to give their father a befitting burial. He further stated that after the thanksgiving service held on Sunday, December 28, the family continued to celebrate the successful burial with friends and loved ones, adding that the large turnout was a testament to the goodwill and respect his father earned during his lifetime.

Also speaking at the event, Hon. Esuikup Obediah Etekan, National Secretary of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide and President of Ida Idoo Unyeada, described the burial as peaceful and successful. He noted that the presence of family members, friends, and well-wishers reflected the positive legacy and good relationship the late Chief maintained with people within and beyond the community.

He explained that his attire at the event, which featured the IYC polo in remembrance of Major Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro, symbolized the struggle for the freedom of the Niger Delta people. He noted that as National Secretary of IYC, wearing the outfit represented continued commitment to the ideals of the Niger Delta freedom struggle.

Hon. Esu also served as the Chef of the Day during the post burial thanksgiving celebration, where he ensured that guests were well catered for, noting that special meals were prepared for visitors in honour of the late High Chief.

The burial ceremony was marked by unity, cultural reverence, and communal bonding, and concluded peacefully with abundant food, drinks, and entertainment for guests, at Unyeada Kingdom bid farewell to a respected leader and community icon.
