Atambom Fishing Cooperative Celebrates 15 Years of Existence, Empowering Youths Across Andoni

 AtaMbom Fishing Cooperative Investment and Credit Society Limited marked its 15 years anniversary of existence on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, with a colourful celebration held at Oyet-Ile, Unyeada, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The cooperative, which is popularly known for its fishing occupation was established in 2010 by His Royal Highness, Bishop (King) Ataisi E. Ogotnte, the Okan-Ama Okpon-Ilei of Unyeada Kingdom, to empower youths, reduce unemployment and promote economic self-reliance within Andoni and neighbouring communities.

Speaking with Bigchiefvibes Media, HRH. Bishop (King) Ataisi E. Ogotnte, who served as the Chief Host of the anniversary, explained that the cooperative was duly registered with relevant government authorities as Ata Mbom Fishing Cooperative Investment and Credit Society Limited.

According to him, the initiative was created to tackle unemployment and provide sustainable livelihoods for young people.

“Ata Mbom fishing was established to empower our youths and reduce unemployment. Today, over 5,000 youths have been empowered through this occupation. It provides food, income and daily sustenance for families without waiting for government jobs,” he said.

The monarch called on Andoni youths and elders to embrace the fishing occupation, describing it as a genuine and productive venture. He also appealed to the Andoni Local Government Council and relevant government agencies to support the cooperative with fishing equipment and financial empowerment, noting that starting the business is capital-intensive.

Also speaking, Mr. Charles Charles, Financial Secretary of the cooperative and Chairman of the Planning Committee, narrated how Ata Mbom fishing transformed his life.

“Through this fishing occupation, I was able to marry my wife, train my children in school, and acquire more than one fishing boat worth millions of naira. Ata Mbom fishing is a blessing. It puts food on our tables,” he said.

He added that the cooperative has strengthened unity among members and also contributed to community development, including the construction of an embankment at Ama-Okpon-Ile to prevent flooding. He further stated that the initiative has helped reduce crime in Unyeada and Andoni, especially after the ban on illegal oil refining activities in Rivers State.

Mr. Charles noted that despite its achievements, the cooperative faces challenges, especially the high cost of starting the business, which has discouraged some interested youths. He appealed to the government to provide soft loans and fishing gears to enable more youths to benefit from the programme.

At the event, Chief Pst. Prince Isaiah, Oroatankpor I, who served as the Father of the Day, donated cash to support the cooperative and also promised to provide a canopy for the group. He encouraged members to remain united and focused.
