Holy City Community Cries Out Over Neglect, Lack of Basic Amenities

 

Holy City Community in Ward 7 of Andoni Local Government Area has raised serious concerns over years of neglect, despite its population strength and consistent participation in elections.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Rev. Chief Stephen Ndegwung, CDC Chairman of Holy City, alongside Rev. Chief Etipetip Robinson, an elder of the community, lamented the absence of government presence and basic social amenities.

According to the leaders, Holy City does not have a single polling unit. They disclosed that during elections, residents cross the river in large numbers to Egbormung Community to cast their votes, a situation they described as unsafe and unfair due to persistent river challenges. They emphasized that the community is large enough to have more than one polling unit and are therefore demanding the immediate establishment of polling units within Holy City.

Beyond electoral concerns, the leaders highlighted the community’s long-standing struggle with the lack of clean and drinkable water. For decades, residents have relied on neighboring communities such as Egbormung and Oloma for water, crossing the river under dangerous conditions. They revealed that storms and heavy waves have, in some cases, led to the tragic loss of children’s lives while attempting to fetch water.

The state of education in the community is also alarming. The Holy City Primary School lacks qualified teachers, forcing community members to volunteer as teachers to keep the school running. Additionally, the school infrastructure requires urgent renovation and maintenance.

The community is appealing to the Chairman of Andoni Local Government, Hon. Prince Lucky Otuo, relevant authorities, and NGOs to urgently intervene by providing clean drinking water, establishing polling units in Holy City, posting qualified teachers to the primary school, renovating school facilities, and ensuring fair inclusion in government empowerment and development programs.

They stressed that Holy City deserves equal treatment, safety, and development like every other community within the local government area.
