February 14th is widely known and celebrated across the world as Valentine’s Day, a season generally seen as a time of love, affection, and exchange of gifts. Many people mark the day by expressing care and appreciation to loved ones through romantic
gestures and acts of kindness.

However, in the spirit of this season of celebration, Hon. Dr. Gogo Ogute Isaiah, former Caretaker Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, shared a completely different and thought-provoking perspective during an interview with Bigchiefvibes Media.

According to him:

“Do I subscribe to the concept of Valentine as a lovers’ day because some people say so? My answer is NO.

I am a critical scholar who asks questions where many do not care to ask.”

He explained that the historical evolution of Valentine’s Day from the 5th century and its later celebration in the 12th and 13th centuries raises serious concerns for him.

“It was a period where the love of Christ for the world was gradually replaced by Roman paganism using the judgment over Saint Valentine as a basis.”

The former chairman further stated that those who celebrate Saint Valentine as a day of love among people are, in his view, acting in contrast to the principles of the love of Jesus Christ.

Offering his advice to the people of Andoni/Obolo, he said:

“The people should see the love of Christ as the supreme love, greater than any other love anyone claims to have for mankind.”

He added that by the 15th century, Valentine’s celebration had, in his opinion, become associated with immorality and pagan practices.

“Nothing can separate me from the love of Christ, not even the artificial love of Saint Valentine.”

The former Andoni LGA Chairman emphasized that true love should reflect purity, sacrifice, and the example set by Christ — not worldly or artificial expressions.
